In 1986, he was living in the United States, just twenty years old and graduating with honors from Santa Rosa Junior College. Derek went directly to Sac State and graduated in Business Administration with a degree in finance in 1989.

Armed with twenty three years of world experiences and a complete education he was ready to take the business industry by storm, beginning in Loan Servicing where he specialized in property taxes and loss mitigation.
